Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher in Forest Hills, PA (the large, bulb-shaped structure on the right) paved the way for researching nonmilitary uses for nuclear energy. It was mothballed in 1958, and when I photographed it in 2013 there was hope to preserve the structure as part of a school. Two years later, however, it was torn down.
